Now that we have a car in the shop, it’s time to get cracking and give our SQ5 some character. There are many 8R SQ5s on the road and we don’t blend in with the crowd. Never have. Never will. So, where to start our modification journey on this family-friendly SUV rocket?
The answer: apply some make-up and hide the blemishes! We’ve booked the car in with the guys at The Wrap Shop to perform a chrome delete, tint the windows and add some custom touches that will help our car stand out from the sea of other SQ5s and performance SUVs littering our roads.
Loads of thought and creativity were poured into our vehicle from the guys. We wanted to get rid of the imperfections on the car’s roof and definitely needed to divert attention from the unsightly dings. So, we opted for some brand new carbon fibre style wrap. Not only is this stuff self-healing, but it also looks like real carbon fibre! Our car would also be the first one fitted with this new material, so we could allow the boys from The Wrap Shop to cut their teeth on a new product at the same time.

We can totally recommend the new carbon fibre wrap offered by The Wrap Shop. This stuff looks amazing and genuinely gives a realistic high-gloss carbon fibre look. It has solved the eyesore that was the roof of our car and transformed the image of the vehicle into something much sportier. Yes, it’s fake carbon fibre….but just look at it!
We weren’t done yet. Here’s a list of things that were done whilst our car was under the care of the guys from TRS:
- Roof wrapped in amazeballs carbon fibre, self-healing film.
- Roof rails and rear valance wrapped in gloss black vinyl
- Chrome window surrounds and other chrome bits wrapped in gloss black vinyl
- The bumper grille blacked out
- Custom SQ5 logos and rear Audi badge blacked out
- Windows tinted to the darkest level allowed by NZTA regulations

We left the side mirrors in the traditional Audi “S” silver to let other enthusiasts know this isn’t some 3.0T Q5 trying to act like its sporty brother. Hey, don’t fix something that isn’t broken, right? There is something to be said for heritage after all.
The result was not cheap but was well worth it. The guys at The Wrap Shop did a fantastic job and went out of their way to meet our expectations and more. We definitely recommend them. Just make sure to get a quote beforehand. Our total bill came to $4400 for everything and when we shopped around later, it did feel a little steep. Competition in the vinyl wrapping market has increased a lot and you can get the same work done for a lot cheaper these days.
Watch this space…there’s a LOT more to come!
